If the Principal had just come in a bit earlier he would have been given an interesting geography lesson.
Did he not read the tag I-
-_-
Did he see an exotic skinned woman and assumed they’re “Miss Garcia”?
🤦♀️
Why am I now thinking this situation is gonna end up like the SpongeBob SquarePants episode Professor Squidward?
The principal is stressed out about his new teacher being a no-show and isn’t thinking clearly. He sees a teacher that he doesn’t immediately recognize and assumes this new teacher making photocopies in his teacher’s lounge is his new teacher.
It doesn’t have to be about race.
I disagree. Being “stressed” isn’t a justification for seeing a random Latina woman and just assuming she’s “Miss Garcia”. He didn’t even ask her any questions to figure out her identity. Something like, “I’m sorry, who are you and what are you doing in here?” He saw her and just assumed. He saw a Latina woman and immediately assumed she is “Miss Garcia”.
He didn’t ask her about her identity because he didn’t have time. “Miss Garcia” was supposed to be there an hour ago and he has to give “Miss Garcia” her orientation. I’ve been there all the time: when you’re running very late and stressed out, you skip steps. Plus, it’s an easy assumption to make that Carmen is Miss Garcia: she’s making photocopies in the teacher-only lounge and is dressed like a teacher. If Carmen wasn’t a teacher, then what is she doing in the teacher’s lounge? Especially since she’s doing a very teacher-like task by making photocopies. None of… Read more »
Amber!! Tsk, Tsk. You should know enough not to argue about the writer’s intent with the writer! I think the writer knows what he wrote regardless whether you think you do. You can ask lots of probing questions and corner him, but don’t disagree. BTW, Its not a Latino question when 71% of Miami is Latino. Latino is expected. As for having some supervisory experience without enough resources, to Paul’s point, I’m scrambling to hide it. I’m taking advantage of any windfall I can get. I’m not sure if Paul wrote this in or not, but with the school shooting… Read more »
I’m not arguing about the author’s intent. I get what Paul intended. That Carmen would be in the wrong place at the wrong time, be mistaken for a teacher and have to try to teach a class. And based on Carlos’ conversation with Gabby, probably comes to like being a teacher. I just felt like the initial interaction between Carmen and the principal has an oversight. That if this was real life (included gender change curse), it would be understandable for Carmen to be offended by someone seeing her, a Latina woman, and assuming she’s Miss Garcia. To be fair,… Read more »
Carmen: What do I do? Me: Correct him and tell him you’re a friend of Gabby. And if he asks about the guy with Gabby, tell him he left and that you’re his cousin (even though it looks like he didn’t notice Carlos was even there in the room with Gabby). Seriously, if this goes where I think this is going, this is going to be a unrealistic misunderstanding. I mean, does the principal not know what Miss Garcia looks like. A little messed up that he saw a Latina woman and just assumed she’s “Miss Garcia”. And shouldn’t the… Read more »
One would think that the principal would remember the faces of the teachers he interviewed and employed
I wonder if something makes the name badge change somehow
Obviously, the principal didn’t see the name badge…probably looking at something else?
what a mess
