Actually no, corsets exist because at the time narrow waists were considered attractive, not because they made the breasts look bigger. That is also why massively wide skirts were a thing, because it made the waist the smaller.
In the heyday of the corsets, food was scarce and expensive, the rich would gorge themselves on food but wanted to look slimmer, hints the corset. And both men and woman wore them.
To add to what you said, outside the rich and the eccentric, corsets weren’t actually made to constrict the waist to make it appear smaller, rather they existed to provide support. If laced properly, as opposed to being laced too tightly, they would actually be comfortable.
Of course, the character is lacing it “too tightly” to get the desired effect, and being a college student on a field which presumably is not History, would not be aware that such a notion is a misconception.
