Well Sam, you do refer to the Fox as “he,” so that kinda rules out magical artifact as that would be more an “it.” Since you’ve alluded to the Fox correcting genders that were originally changed because of Ruby’s interference, my guess is that the Fox is in his current form as a sacrifice to imprison Ruby in a similar form.
